Renowned Hindu saint Tulsi Das established a Hanuman Temple here during 16th century and since then it has been called Hanuman Ghat. The ancient name of the ghat was Rameshwaram Ghat which was mythologically established by Lord Rama where the Rameshwaram temple is located.
The original site of Rameshwaram temple of Lord Shiva is located on the beach in Rameswaram, Tamilnadu, in the southern direction of India. Lord Shiva’s temple is situated on the Hanuman Ghat as a symbol of Rameshwaram Temple in Kashi. It is believed that the devotees who worship Rameshwaram in Kashi will get the same punyafal as they get while visiting Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. Devotees who worship this Ling will derive happiness and prosperity.
Here, Lord Purushottam Shri Ram established the shivlinga made of sand during the evening libation.
